News, views and shoes.*
*There aren’t actually any posts about shoes here. But it rhymed and the rhythm of three works well. Hence the shoes.
Shhh… don’t tell anyone. Here’s an advanced preview of my 50th article for MagicSeen magazine. It’s a satirical political piece (hence the title here!) from the forthcoming issue of MagicSeen published at the world’s biggest magic convention later this month. Now, if you’re not a magician, much won’t make sense to you… but a quick overview is that I have merged the titles of famous magic tricks with current famous politicians. I call it ‘PoliTricks’.
The tricks are:
The Farrow Shuffle – a magical shuffle with playing cards. Card in Walnut – a signed card appears inside a walnut. ACAAN – Any Card At Any Number; a freely chosen playing card appears at a freely chosen number in the deck. Silk to Egg – a silk handkerchief changes into an egg. Hamman Count – a special false count using cards. Vanishing Cola Bottle (self explanatory). Three Card trick AKA Find The Lady (self explanatory). Chameleon Cards – colour changing cards. Wrist Chopper – a persons wrist is magically penetrated by a steel blade. Ambitious Card – a card repeatedly rises to the top of the deck by magic. Dippy Duck – a classic magic prop made famous by Tommy Cooper. Zombie AKA The Floating Ball (self explanatory).
With that secret knowledge imparted, enjoy PoliTricks!
You know a magic trick is good when you show it to a few pro’s (our term for Professional Magicians, although am sure it applies to all manner of trades) and they scratch their heads and ask you, heaven forbid, to break the golden rule of magic and repeat it. Working with one of my close magic mentors, a spiffing chap called Mark Leveridge, we throw ideas back and forth regarding simple but effective magic tricks for our beginner audience of magicians to learn at the magic school. I read an idea in a book for a mind-reading trick. Mark played with the little tinker and came back with a new idea which fooled me badly. And we think we know it all! And now we’ve made it available for our members to learn. But here’s a link to a cheeky little demo if you want to know what all my fuss is about. (Trust me, after spending most of my waking life with magic, tricks and magicians, it is very rare to be fooled by something which appears so innocent.) OK, you probably will wonder just why the fuss… but should you like it and want to learn, then do join the magic school today. A new year’s hobby, even a career change, may await you.
But can you make money from being a magician? When I tell people I am a magician, they usually reply with the customary ‘Aw, how brave. Kids parties is it?’ Well, our current Magic-Hero in the UK is Dynamo who I believe netted (before tax etc) £18 million in 2015/16.
Maybe someone learning at our school will be the next Dynamo?! If so, and you need a manager…

Mark Leveridge is a professional magician and has been a mentor and dear friend of mine since I was around 8 years young. One of the great perks of shooting new videos for Marvin’s Magic School is collaborating with Mark to devise new pieces of magic for beginners that embody the fundamental techniques that every good magician should begin with. This month our free trick was devised by Mark and features him performing and explaining a miracle matchbox piece of magic. Even at this beginners stage, it is still of paramount importance to practice, practice, practice, and begin to understand that to deceive an intelligent adult audience takes great skill and clever thinking.
I’ve often thought that a modern adult audience would perhaps be more impressed to see how the magician manages to create the appearance of magic, as the techniques, skills and psychology involved often far outweighs what appears to be a simple magic trick.
However, one of the tenets of magic is to never reveal the secret! Am I being hypocritical then by running an online magic school? I feel not, as without wannabe magicians having somewhere and someone knowledgeable to turn to to learn the basic skills of this fascinating craft, then they often resort to YouTube and pick-up bad habits and poor technique. So, if you want to learn the correct way to do magic, then join Marvin’s Magic School today and learn the free magic matchbox trick right now. Oh, and if you do, please keep the secret!
Great to be working with one of Europe’s most progressive magicians, Butzi, illustrating his forthcoming book about the magician’s creative process. This area is of particular interest to me, as I’ve created many projects outside of magic as entertainment, utilising the magicians unique knowledge and skills of problem-solving (after all, we have to think different from ‘normal’ folks in order to create magic that cannot be solved by everyday logical thinking, and therefore appear impossible). A book exploring techniques and theory on how magicians can develop this creative skill is extremely intriguing.
Right, off to sharpen the pencils!
Now being populated by yours truly, the Marvin’s Magic School channel offers free tips and advice for budding magicians everywhere. The latest Halloween video taught you how to make a real live Zombie hand burst through your chest to scare folk. Although, thinking about it, Zombie’s are actually dead aren’t they? So, it’s a real live dead hand… or something! Anyway, if you like magic, please do subscribe here.
It was with delight I chanced upon a magician in Washington D.C. called Phil Telfeyan. Phil markets himself as a charity magician, sharing his skills and passion for magic free of charge to raise money for good causes. I interview Phil as part of my Magic Moments series of articles, just published in MagicSeen. Special thanks to MagicSeen for permission to reprint the article here. Really excited to be launching a new range of high-end luxury furniture in 2017. Inspired by magic & illusion, I’ve designed the first few pieces to be sure-fire talking points, that will add class and clout in any setting. Made to the highest standards by Master Craftesmen in the UK, Wundre will be launched in Spring 2017.
A lot of work has been happening behind the scenes and so watch this space for first news on the new – and world’s only – illusion furniture!
So, what has a magician got to do with the medical profession? Actually, there’s a lot of cross-over. Magic used for therapy, magicians as healers and much, much more. But this occasion was my first dabble with organising a medical conference. ‘Osteopathic Philosophy & Principles in Practice’ took place on October 7th & 8th, presented by my friend Walter McKone. Walter is one of the world’s leading practitioners and authors in his field of medical expertise and I was thrilled when he approached me to use my expertise (a-hem!) to organise and market his first UK seminar.
Walter lectures worldwide to other medical professionals, and we’re now working on establishing his brand in the UK marketplace. With a ticket price reflective of his experience, an enthusiastic group of professionals traveled from across Europe to attend the event which took place near London.
The feedback has been amazing, and we’re now working on Walter’s next medical conference in Spring 2017, plus a new book aimed at the mainstream market.
